Maud Hart Lovelace Book Club

MHL Book Club photo

Who: All interested 4th and 5th graders.

What: Students read and discuss 10 awesome MHL award nominee books!

When: Meetings take place once or twice a month on scheduled Fridays from 8:30am-9:10am in the Westview Library

If your child loves to read, the Maud Hart Lovelace Book Club offers an exciting challenge. In conjunction with the Maud Hart Lovelace Award, sponsored by Minnesota Youth Reading Awards, children may participate in a reading contest to help choose a statewide winner. Books have a variety of genres, lengths and subjects. Children often tell us they end up reading books they never thought would interest them. Reading choices grow through this program.

To be able to vote for their favorite book, children must read or listen to three out of the ten nominated books. Voting takes place in the spring and the statewide winner is announced on Maud Hart Lovelace's birthday, April 25.

Multiple copies of each nominated book are available in our library, as well as at the Dakota County branch libraries. They are also available to purchase from local retailers such as Barnes & Noble and Half-Price Books at our Scholastic Book Fairs in November and February.

Our book club has ten meetings during the school year where students will discuss the nominated books, share insights and opinions, and ask their burning questions. Past meetings have included authors and Skype visits. Students who read each book and participate in our MHL Book Club will be invited to our year-end celebration.

Mrs. Theirl leads the club, please email with any questions.
